I wasn’t originally going to write about this because when I read it I thought, ok that makes sense and went along my merry merry way. It seems there is a bit of questions concerning the changes happening to how you obtain festival mounts so I’ll do my best to spell it out and explain why I feel it is not such a big deal.
It starts with this post by Budgeford explaining that there will be a new vendor for the festival mounts that will be found at the Hengstacer Farm (where you would normally buy a regular mount). This vendor will only be active during a festival and will only sell mounts (and other items) that pertain to the active festival. The cost of the mounts will be 1 festival run token, 12 festival tokens, and 1 document of mount ownership. All festival mounts can be purchased at a discount if you already own a horse/pony (1.6 gold) otherwise it is the full 4g price tag.
Currently you can ride up to Hengstacer Farm and trade in your mount for any of the festival mounts if you have the tokens on hand. It doesn’t have to be during the festival to get one. Also if purchased from the vendor at the farm, the horse was only 6 festival tokens (instead of the full price of 12). I believe this discount was unintended because if you had purchased it from the festival vendor during the festival, the price was 12 tokens plus all the other stuff.
To me this change makes sense and I’m not bothered by it in the least. It makes sense that special festival horses would only be available for purchase during a festival. This isn’t stopping you from buying a mount at all, just these special mounts will only be available a few short weeks during the year.
The main question seems to stem around alts who have all the tokens they require but either not the level the first mount to get the special mount at this time. You can purchase a regular mount and wait until next fall or whichever horse you prefer. If it’s due to your level, you couldn’t ride it anyway and will have to wait. It’s really not that big a deal. It’s not like other MMO’s where the game designers remove cool special mounts from the game entirely.
I’m really ok with this change and the addition of the discount is very nice for those who now see themselves becoming mount collectors.

I’m definitely looking forward to the traditional horse race return. I know the new system is necessary, but it kind of bums me out.

I think if I had saved up tokens I’d have been bummed out about this, but I have to believe that Turbine has better foresight considering their behind-the-scenes knowledge of the game. However, maybe a bit of a “heads up” would have been nice before the Fall Festival so that people weren’t running around saving up items on their alts. Of course, who knows if they had even made the final decision about this at that time, but still… Last minute changes tend to garner the most ire, and this feels like a last minute change.

So you are telling me that i DON’T have to spend 1.6g AFTER the festival if I just give out my mount?

This is an older post. See the General Festival Guide for current processes. You no longer trade in mounts. Mounts cost 500silver for your first and 200silver all else.
