Personally, I think the Adventurer’s Pack sets a bad precedent, and opens up the possibility of micro-transactions for other items in the future. I pretty much play only one toon, so I don’t need the extra character slots or shared storage. I can live without the goat and the cloak. I’m already on a multi-month plan, so will get SoM for free. Anyway, I’m gonna skip it this time. (I’m sure we’ll see more packages like this in the future).

I do understand where you’re coming from because if you were a current multi-monther, you were already getting Mirkwood and would have had to pay extra for these goodies. For those already in multi-month plan, this seems just like extra crud to get your money.
For the lifetimers, this was really viewed more as an “collectors edition” version of Mirkwood. For $20 we were getting Mirkwood expansion plus all these goodies. And by preordering we got it sort of on sale since it’s $39 for both if you didn’t preorder and we got it for half that.
I completely understand your view but I don’t know if this truly is opening any flood gates for micro-transactions. If you look how the European pre-order is set up, it is described more the way we’re used to being that the preorder is a set price and includes goodies rather than all the marketing lingo of “get mirkwood free!” that we saw here in the states.
