Outside LOTRO: European Chat

Posted on 23. Nov, 2009 by Merric in Codemasters, Turbine

QuestionsToday WarCry held their second Developer Chat, this time aimed at European players.  Making an appearance this time were Sapience, Jalessa, Raskolnikoy, ZombieColumbus, and Faya.  And although there were quite a few fans in attendance, I’m not sure what the issues were but the chat this time around seemed a bit more disorganized.  First off, it neither started on time, nor did it last that long.  Secondly, there were not as many questions answered (whether it was due to lack of time or questions, I’m not sure).  And thirdly, most of the questions answered were already answered in the first chat.

There were a couple of questions that I hadn’t seen before such as “Why is all the end-game gear purple instead of teal?” (Because it’s not the last set of gear we’ll see in Mirkwood.) and “if PvMP gear will be brought up to par with raiding gear” (the new gear will be brought up to par with the 3-man/6-man gear).  However, most of the other answers were the same that we’ve seen over time or answered “no/not at this time”.  Overall, I think a lot of people were disappointed in the chat, but I’m not sure if it could be helped.  I hadn’t spent much time thinking about a question, but the one I came up with was rather droll.  Honestly, I just want it to be 8+ days from now so I’ll have Mirkwood in my hot little hobbit hands!

However, no matter what your opinion of the chat was, I think we all are appreciative of those members of Turbine and Codemasters for taking the time out of their day to spend time with the community; and especially to WarCry for organizing both of the chat.  Thank you all!

I have attached a PDF file of the transcript that I took, or you can head over to WarCry for their version.

I cannot help but feel that the devs were also in a monday mood (I was quite tired, just came home in time for the chat), and for them it was not monday evening, but they still had work to do. They felt a bit in a hurry, as if they had to be done with this soon. The “Instance guy” was not there, according to one dev (Rado… and something).

I think the Devs were not really in a chatty mood at the start of the week either. And only the European CMs could have addressed the common question why there is no MyLOTRO for the EU website.

Can’t help, but I had this feeling this chat was only done because Codemasters CMs asked Turbine if they could squeeze in a chat that is not hours after midnight for the Europeans. Both devs and players had much more fun in the previous chat which also had more questions and the devs gave much more information. There were some really good questions where I wondered that they did not get asked, and no, I am not talking about my question. ;)

I had to keep checking to make sure I was still online, what with all the delays between questions! It was certainly slower than the last dev chat, but I’m still glad they took the time to do it.

I actually had a question about skill training costs and the amount of crafting materials needed for low level characters and crafters, but I forgot all about it until the chat was over. Oops!

I went AFK during this chat to help with the baby, but I have to say that I was actually stunned when I started seeing reports on Twitter about how slow and short it was. And when I started going through the chat log I had to check a couple of times to make sure I hadn’t accidentally cut something out. I’m not sure what happened here, but something just didn’t “click” I think; and the chat suffered because of it. Oh well, here’s hoping that (the U.S.) Thanksgiving will give Turbine a little bit of a break and let them re-charge before we dive right into Mirkwood!
