In this episode of CStM, Merric and Goldenstar talk about their journey out of the darkness of Moria and into the glorious light of Lothlórien. Goldenstar of course roamed out of the boundaries for new comers to the Golden Wood and was shot several times. Azz even tried and showed me the borders and I still wandered. Silly Hobbit!
We were also able to make it into Mirkwood and take a bit of time to complain about the spawn rate issues they were experiencing. We are through the beginner instance and starting to quest in the “Mirkwood Proper” as people have told us it’s called.
Our main topic this week was suggested by Osiran is “Growing With Your Game”. How has gaming evolved for us as we’ve grown older, started a career (left school), got married and had a baby?
Town Crier:
- Merric in a Dress. AKA Cosmetic Skirmish Rewards Posts
- Lotro New Year Lotteries
- Some Skirmish encounters are dropping trash loot. If you receive one it is a bug and it should be reported.
- The Tukar encounter in Theivery and Mischief has been confirmed to not be spawning correctly.
- There is the possibility that some encounters in Amon Sul may be broken and are not spawning.
Player News:
- LOTRO Cookbook
- We officially have a voicemail box! You now can call and leave us a message that we can use in the podcast. Call us at 520-261-CSTM (2786)
- User created Guide by Haperella on Legendary Items
- Kill Ten Rats reports on a rumor/conjecture that the next expansion or Volume 3 will start in Dunland, having us push on through to Rohan.
- CStM has two new people aboard who will be contributing to the blog. A very warm welcome to Veneration and I hope everyone will enjoy his posts! The other you probably already know especially if you listen to this show. Everyone welcome Azz from Wizzard of Azz!

I am looking forward to hear your comments about the questing in the Mirkwood. It has been done very well IMO, also the books as Skirmishes. Baby Hobbit needs to grow up fast, or you will need Azz to fill up to the magic number 3.
I am really interested about your opinion on the Dol Guldur instance cluster. I must admit I am rather disappointed with the 3 man instances there. The Dungeons are about as unpopular as the Oculus in WoW, the Wargpens are not bad, it is just everyone is farming the Swordhalls over and over. I do not like the “arena” design for instances, WoW’s coliseum is another example of this kind of instance.
I will listen to your podcast tonight, there is a gap to fill before Dr. House is on TV.

I can sympathize with Merric. I’m so glad EQ didn’t come out while I was in college, I had enough trouble going to work daily when I first started playing and that was something I had to do. If I’d just had classes, I don’t think I would’ve had the discipline actually go.

Oh yeah and: Woot! Volume 1 is done!

Hey, nice main topic! This post will be long…
My gaming evolution is a bit similar – I left college a year early and moved 1000 miles from home to take a pretty good job doing exactly what I wanted to do. I didn’t know anyone at my new place, and being a 20 year old kid I was much younger than most of my coworkers. The job itself at the time only required about 4 hours a day of actual work, so I was left with tons and I mean TONS of free time. Idle hands are the devil’s work, so..
I soon went to the local Walmart and bought myself an HP desktop computer for $798 (this was in 1999, even then it was a piece of junk), it was my first machine and I knew jack squat about computers. Of course I had to buy some games to fill my free time; I ended up with Final Fantasy VII, Diablo, and some other standard stuff that I played the crap out of.
Around that time was when Everquest was really making news, so I went to the local EB and checked it out. The shared world really intrigued me. The store manager saw me looking and came over with the Asheron’s Call box as well. Basically, I chose AC based on the box art
EQ looked too cartoony with that badger-looking thing surrounded by spell effects on the back!
So began my Asheron’s Call addiction. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… AC wasn’t really a raiding type of game, it was the most soloable of the MMOs. Some things required groups of course, but the standard MMO formula wasn’t used. It was almost like a 3D Diablo with uber character customization. Missile attacks and some spells actually utilized the physics engine and were dodgeable! I loved it. I liked the people. Even met an online friend for dinner once (I was the person who answered that it didn’t go well on the poll
My girlfriend at the time (1000 miles away) was working on her master’s, so the time I spent gaming wasn’t really a negative factor for us. We got married and she moved up to join me and start the process of training me to be a responsible and relatively normal human being.
Several years later now I’ve moved on from AC, have two gorgeous children, am active in our community, a generally respected fellow, and of course play LOTRO. I probably average an hour or two a day at most, a big change from my bachelor days of 12-14 hour sessions. I still go on benders from time to time, but I still manage to stay fairly balanced in all things.
Anyway, I was inspired to share after listening to the podcast this morning. Great job, as always!

My baby hobbits are finally old enough to play LOTRO with me, though it is not a regular occurance. And the younger one prefers playing tricks on other players to killing boars. My boy is all about getting a fellowship together and slaughtering below-level critters.

This is one of the best main topics so far…You tend to see similar topics show up in all podcasts, but this is very fresh. Great suggestion!

You guys are sooo not casual players..
January 7, 2010 at 2:36 pm
We have spurts here and there but I consider us to be pretty darn casual these days. Especially compared to how we used to play!

I really like your podcast. I’m listening to old ones right now
. I really like the background music too, it gives something extra to the podcast. Keep up the good work!
