In this episode of CStM, we discuss Goldenstars troubles with leveling in Mirkwood solo and then her problems trying to get around in Caras Galadhon. She has finished the superior scholar and now can just make all sorts of potions when she feels like it instead of for skill. Oh and Goldenstar hates space.
Merric feels his Mirkwood experience has went from being on the edge of helping with the war effort to going back to being the exterminator of creatures. Not feeling as epic at the moment. He has also been working hard on his cooking alt to make us hungry hobbits food!
Our main topic this week is cheating in MMOs. The draw to do so, the consequences to the economy for such actions and the repercussions you’ll have to live with.

I started playing Lotro about a month and a half ago and started looking for a Lotro podcast at the same time. I randomly downloaded one of each and yours was my favorite so I downloaded all of them and have now finally caught up. You give a lot of good information and I love the way you poke at each other and make the podcast a lot of fun. I even love hearing Baby Hobbit and Snarling Wolf in the background. Keep up the great podcast.

For anyone one not aware of the “Porkchop Sandwiches” blurting, here is the reference. This is NOT SAFE FOR WORK. Foul language:

Goldenstar, I have a saying:
“Could be worse; could be Drownholt.”
I hate that area. The thing to do is, annoyingly, kill everything. Tira and I did Drownholt in pairs, so as to get through it all in one night.
—
Merric: Beg Goldenstar to come along with you to Dannenglor — that area is super hard and annoying. There’s also a skirmish mission for it once you get that far in Books.
Also: if you do all the one-shot quests in Lorien, and repeat the dailies in Lorien for like… three or four days, you’ll get Kin with the Galladrim.
—
Re: part of the war — The skirmishes that you get through finishing the Book really make you part of the war effort. There’s a siege you do the defense for that I kinda like.
—
Blah blah blah. I’ll shut up now.

“Erm, just a little note regarding Star Trek”
C`mon Goldenstars… women treated bad in Star Trek. Can I remind you of a poor black dood in Deep Space 9 (well… now you know why Merric did not like the DS9 series, just kidding).
Damn, he has a main roll in the series and poor d00d did not given a chance to fly Voyager, Enterprise or whatever were the names of those ships. Maybe I am wrong, but whenever I poped on that series, he was always in that station in DEEEEEEEEEP SPACE 9 lol., with “I wonder why” look on his face.
Remember Captain Janeway a WOMAN
)) that took command of USS Voyager. Brutal, just brutal, poor d00d
))
p.s. sorry for me english, it is not my how do you say mother language.

Heh. I do remember that there was a woman captain I. One of the series. I don’t know much about the series in general though although it sounds like not just women were kept down. Another reason to not play STO!

Tryed Beta just for curiosity sake and it was a mess, maybe it will get better on later levels.
I`m playing EvE, and LOTRO of course.
Cheers.

Often overlooked for gaining Galadhrim reputation: when you finish book 6, you’ll get 20.000 reputation. I have no idea why people call it a grind, I did every quest just once.

So I wasn’t clear, GoldenStar, you don’t like space or Star Trek?
Oh yeah, and Drownholt is rough but not so bad at 65, at least for a hunter.
January 20, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Both. Space is stupid. Star Trek is in space so I guess is stupid by association? But yeah, I’m not a fan of either.

Good Day Merric and Golden Star,
I’ve been catching up on all your archived podcasts and I thought I would briefly introduce myself and weigh in on the ethical considerations of cheating. I, like the both of you, have had several years of experience MMOing. My online playing experience began a long time ago with MUSHing, I used to play on a Middle Earth MUSH called Elendor. This was a text-roleplaying environment created by dedicated players/architects by coding using UNIX/LINEX commands. I moved through playing Diablo 2 online, to Everquest, Everquest 2, and WoW. My former housemates and I played just about everything we could in beta or just as it was newly released to try it out, Guild Wars, LOTRO, SWG, for example, but we seemed to settle on WoW which I played from first release to just a bit after Burning Crusade. Now that I’m married, working full time, and my wife and I are expecting our first child, I’ve settled on LOTRO as a casual gaming experience – much like yourselves. It seemed natural, I have always been a fan of Tolkien’s Middle Earth and playing in that world is very rewarding. I give props to the design team for doing such a great job and graphically representing ME – great job!
No on to your comments regarding morality, ethics and cheating. Goldenstar, I was laughing as you were trying to bait Merric into your philosophical trap! However, he was not be drawn in. Ethics and Morality are by their nature subjective. We each arrive at a preferred method of behaviour by our own individual reasoning – which is an extension of our personal values. Merric seems to take an rules-based perspective. He seems to value rules in an of themselves. Turbine has created these rules for LOTRO and you are bound to them as a player in their created world. Goldenstar seems to have a less regimented perspective, or at least is arguing from that position. Rules are guides to behaviour, generally set up by a society or group of individuals to achieve the greater good of the whole of its members. In the case of LOTRO the rules were not created by the society of LOTRO players, they were created by Turbine and are thus a contract as opposed to a social agreement and subsequently Turbine has the right to punish those that transgress their contractual obligations.
However, in a rules based system, areas of ambiguity will always exists because rules cannot by created for every possible situation (which is why most advanced legal systems allow for legal interpretation by judges as opposed to blind obedience to regulations). I like your appeal to the greater good, i.e. the detrimental effects of cheating to the community to which you belong. I think it is important, both in game and out, to see how your actions affect the group/society/nation to which you belong. I think you two did an excellent job at covering the essentials.
I don’t know if you notice people posting on these old episodes or not…but I thought it best to put in my two sense where it was relevant. In my profession ethics and morals are a key component to understanding leadership and successful outcomes. I love the pod cast and share many of the same outlooks as you two. Now if I could only get my wife to play with me!!
Slainte Mhath,
Wulfgaard
