Episodes from 2010, Podcast

A Casual Stroll to Mordor Album Art In this episode of CStM, Goldenstar has been made an officer of her kin, The Council of the Secret Fire. She worked on her jewelcrafter and opened up skirmishes for her Burglar.  Merric didn’t do much in game this week but he did find time to install LOTRO on his netbook.

Merric also went and looked around on Bullroarer looking at the new skirmish cosmetics. We spend some time chatting about the new cosmetic items and how we would use them.

We discuss the Book 1 Release Notes and the dev diaries that were released in the past week.

From Steve on Firefoot:

Hello. Love the show. It was really hard to find a Lotro podcast

I played at launch and got to about level 25 then got sucked back into warcraft :(

I just recently decided to come back and bought a lifetime membership. My problem is that I’m totally lost as to leveling zones.

I was able to get my Champion to 42 (mainly skirmishes) but realized I didnt really have any traits or deeds and just felt lost.

Now trying to decide between hunter and burglar.

Have you guys had a show on leveling or plan on having one? For example: what zones/areas 1-10, 11-20, 20-30 etc…

Thanks and keep the great shows flowing!

To answer Steve from Firefoot, about leveling. From my various characters, this is roughly what I did:

< 10: starter area (depends on race)
10-high teens: Bree area (Barrows, Old Forest)
high teens – mid 20's: Lone Lands (Forgotten Inn), early North Downs (Trestlebridge)
mid 20's – high 20's: Lone Lands (Ost Guruth), North Downs (west of Esteldin)
high 20's – low 30's: North Downs (east of Esteldin)
low 30's – high 30's: Evendim, Evendim (Eavespires)
high 30's – low 40's: Angmar (Ram Duath, Aughaire), early Trollshaws
low 40's – mid 40's: Trollshaws (Echad Candelleth), early Forochel (Kaupa Kohta), Misty Mountains, Angmar (Gabilshathur)
mid 40's – high 40's: Forochel, Misty Mountains (High Pass), Angmar (Gath Forthnir)
high 40's – low 50's: Eregion (Gwingris on to Echad Mirobel)
    low 50's – high 50's: Moria!
    high 50's – 60: Lothlorien
    60+: Mirkwood

    About Legendary item advancement:
    - When using item xp coins, all your xp will be used, even when you legendary item had to be reforged in between. If you deconstruct a high level (say lvl 60 or lvl 70) legendary item you can obtain an ixp coin that allows a new legendary item to become level 30 at once (that means 3 reforges in a row).
    - Item xp earned by killing mobs or that is given as a quest reward (directly, not in the form of a coin) is not carried over a reforge. So with quests that give you large amount of direct item xp, you might want to reforge your item first or it might be a waste.

Hitching = experience stuttering in game.

This happens for example when you enter the 21st hall, there are lots of characters walking around and your game is a shocking experience. This happens because all these characters have outfits with a certain texture (image) on it. All these textures have to be loaded from your hard disk.

Because loading textures from the hard drive is very slow, your framerate of the game drops to say 1 frame per second. This also depends on your game settings, you will have more problems if you have `very high resolution textures’ turned on. After 10-20 seconds the speed gets better again, your computer is done loading all outfit textures into memory (which is fast).

By using the turbine defrag tool (which also works on the EU client) the contents of the data files of the game are reordered on your hard disk so they can be read faster into main memory. Thereby it will reduce hitching/stuttering/low framerates when entering a new area.

(this not only applies to player outfits, but players are the most notable reason for this to happen: all other things in game have textures as well, but if you are in a lonely part of the lone lands there are less textures to be loaded than when you are in a crowded place like Bree, 21st hall or Ost Galadh).
