Episodes from 2010, Podcast

albumartFinally back on our regular schedule after our week of interviews last week. We do a final recap of our PAX experience.

We talk about the Spring Festival events and Merric’s general apathy towards this festival this time around. Goldenstar has done the events so much that she’s pretty much burnt out on the events and is playing her Runekeeper for a break.

The Landroval Fortune Cookie house is still open as Merric visited it after the podcast and was able to finish his deeds. Thank you very much Saelamlug!

I’d also like to give a special thank you to Hellnakh who took the time to type out a transcript of our interview with Frelorn. We were super impressed with her effort to do this and appreciate it!

Letter from Miketoe of Arkenstone:

Hello

I’m Miketoe, A level 32 Hobbit minstrel on the Arkenstone server.

I run the horse races with this minstrel. I won the race in the Shire last night.

This is from my activity log.

Miketoe Completed ‘The Delving Fields Spring Festival …

I really enjoy the podcast and the blog. I just wanted to point this out because if I went by your wonderful Spring guide and I would never have run the race and I would have missed out on some fun. (I read it after my first race.) I regularly try the horse race in the Shire and Bree but I’ve only won twice in the shire. I think it’s easier in the Shire and I need all the help I can get.

However, I always take the leaves not the horse permit as a reward, because I don’t intend to level this hobbit up soon . So I can’t comment on whether I could select the horse permit instead of the leaves. Or if I could convert the permit into the actual horse when that becomes available.

My Dwarf Mikeion, level 30 won a Springfest horse in the lottery, but of course he can’t use it until he passes the riding challenges at 35. Anyone over level 30 was allowed into the lottery. So maybe the hobbit can get the horse too.

I don’t know what level is required to run the horse race but it is not 35.

Thanks for the great podcast.

P.S. My main Mikegar also won the SpringFest horse in a lottery and I ride it everywhere. I even got green armor to compliment the green horse.

Another great podcast! I appreciate the plug for Mordor or Bust — lots of people have found it because of you two!

I was able to work out my control issues in DDO and indeed gave it a second chance. Glad I did too — it ends up being a great alternative to LOTRO. I’ll work up a post about it soon.

    Thanks again!

Great episode! (as usual :) )

Concerning the Sting-effect it is just a fix, weapons have glowed since SoA days but with Mirkwood (or was it volume 3?) the two-handers stopped doing that for some reason.
The weapons that glow have ‘+ x damage to something’ written on them in violet letters. For example: + 9 Damage to Beast.

P.S. How did the exorcising go?

Ah, OK. That makes sense then. I’m going to have to take a look at that and see if I even have any characters that have weapons like that. I know I had some throughout Moria/Mirkwood, but not sure I do anymore.

Glad you found your demon and your souls are secure. Also, you guys just answered my question about the spring horse vendor. Asked a few times in game and no one seemed to know anything about him. Guess I’ll have to keep more tokens in my vault, but at least I wont have it there for a whole year. Thanks guys.

Another great Casual Stroll to Mordor. To pronounce Harperiel, think Harp-Ariel (like the little Mermaid). Her name is Aiel, the title is Harper, so the name is Harper Aiel, contracted to Harperiel. Too compilcated i know. I get Harperelle all the time. Mostly ,just Harp or Harper, which suits me fine.

I would like to say that I made myself a complete hypocrite and now own 4 different types of kegs and have even done some of the Ale Association quest… and WOW. Those guys are some real jerks! Geez!

Just wanted to comment: Another great episode!

The #glff channel on the Gladden server is pretty active right now – people are constantly posting requests to join runs for Hall of Crafting, Sammuth Gul, Turtle, action in the moors, etc.

Granted, because of the size of the channel you’re going to have quite a bit of irrelevant chatter going as some of the regulars use the channel as their own personal conference room. But really, is kinchat any different?

I’ve learned to tune it out or really only join that channel when I’m looking for a run or two and my kinnies are being bums!

How’s this for a lff scheme… In your quest log, a couple of new radio boxes:

[ ] Make this quest public
[ ] Make all quests public

Then in your social panel you can do a search (just like today) for others with your same quest. The LFF search that is in there now suffers from the flaw that you can only have one quest lff at a time. Usually this is 0 quests, since you have to set it each time you log in. Instead, you should be able to advertise I’m looking for X, Y, Z quests and search for X, Y, Z quests. Its a fairly minor UI change from what we have now. However, I suspect the underlying problem would be performance. After all, these are the same folks who can’t implement multiple items in a mail due to server performance.

LOL, yeah that mail stuff bothers me. I don’t buy the server performance excuse at this point. Maybe on release… Maybe. But then again, I’m not their systems engineer. However, instead I think it’s really the fact that it would take a reworking of the system in which it will take money and manpower. Because the only way that you can truly know if it would affect performance is to:

      1. Have a working mail system that accepts multiple attachments that can be used within the game.

      2. Simulate it in-house, then on Isengard.

I tend to believe that they do not have such a system in place though, and that early on in some system or proposed plan it was determined that it would affect system performance so they built a system that would only handle one attachment.

However, I have absolutely no proof of anything that I just said. :D

I recently joined the GLFF on Silverlode and it is relatively spam free. For the most part, it is just folks looking to do quests.

One thing I’ve done is create a separate tab for more “spammy” channels such that I can ignore them if I want to.

  9. Ivaneus Says:

I tend to find that Landroval’s [GLFF] tends to be full of more random chatter simply because people that say “LFF ‘insert quest name here’” tend to have their group filled up very quickly (excluding off hours when there’s only 3 people talking in [GLFF]). The talking is just because it’s more efficient, or least that’s the excuse I use to justify the random fun I enjoy!

    And BTW cheesecake is more of a glorified tofu . . . pie-like . . . thing (yeah, I don’t really like cheesecake).

    Reply

    • Merric Says:

LOL, you must not like cheesecake if you compare it to tofu. That aside, I think the point I was trying to make is that if you have a LFF system it cannot rely upon a chat component. Because most of the time when I see any kind of global chat it usually turns away from its intended purpose (trade, lff, roleplay, etc) and the topic turns to real life.

    Yeah, Pax was really fun.
The COD4-MW2 Tourney was very fun and the Skate 2 comp went really well too. Very fun stuff.

If you haven’t read through my post about the event from my point of view – take a look here! >

I haven’t done the Ale Association quest but my wife has and I’ve seen enough to formulate an opinion. Dwarves are just like Men: some are bad, some are good, even amongst the Longbeards.

But the “bad” Longbeards are just cranky and, well, kind of xenophobic or even racist. Thorin is the big example: in The Quest of Erebor (kind of the prequel to The Hobbit) he talks about how worthless the Shire-folk are and even when Gandalf talks about their metalcraft Thorin assumes they probably stole it from the dwarves.

So the idea of a mean dwarf wanting to sabotage the Inn League out of pride for his own people, I think, is totally plausible.

    Anyways, my two coppers.
