Episode 38: Hail Brownsmear

Goldenstar Fire Breath Emote

Both of us have attempted our first try at Sammath Gul and we made it to the second boss before things went bad. Goldenstar feels a bit responsible for not being able to heal everyone. We briefly discuss small changes that may make the encounter easier.

Goldenstar and Merric attempted to duo the Rift skirmish and did not do well on the final boss. Azz said he thought we could do it together and he was right so now Goldenstar has finished Volume 3 Book 1. Yay!

Goldenstar has re-traited her minstrel to a more balanced build and is able to do solo things again. Having fun doing skirmishes. Goldenstar also has brand new jewelry thanks to Bryandt and Azz. Merric also received a new jewelry piece from their crafting. Also Goldenstar now has the /firebreath emote!

In Merric news, he got his captain to level 35. The End.

    Hi.
2nd boss 1st phase, tank face him away from the group so he doesn’t cleave everyone. The whole fight have an Rk spam do not fall to lightning so it absorbs every lightning attack. 2nd phase, all the group get into the back left corner on his stage, champ dps behind him guard face him away in the other corner with shield brother on the champ. RK keep up do nto fall to lightning, everyone else ranged dps.

Lots of good helpful SG guides on the forums. GL

Small problem. We had no Runekeeper.

Yeah, our makeup was Guardian in OP, Warden, Minstrel, Hunter, Captain and Lore-master. I think we were a bit light on the DPS and that my Guardian would have been better swapped with something else.

      Thanks for the tip! :)

The fight in general reminds me of the Safety Dance in WoW where you really need to have some tight group coordination to avoid extraneous damage. We’ll work on it. The lorebook has a great map of the lightning sequences for anyone who’s not familiar with it.

Its tougher without one for sure, but standing in the back corner does mitigate a lot of the lighting across the group. I’ve healed SG & its the toughest to heal of the instance imo.

^^ What Hatch says only we rarely have a RK, its no biggie to the general strategy.

All I’d add is make sure ALL classes are in mellee range for first phase, even hunters etc, then no one can forget to run in close when he picks his target and says his script.

In the last phase we all go into the back left, and ranged dps, and melees just run out when there is a lightening gap, but I think either way is fine. Main thing is stay tight in the back corner by a pillar and only come out when you are sure it safe!

I have only run SG once and we did not make it past the last boss (Goruthul I think?). However, we did make it to him and actually had the easiest time with the 2nd boss. What we did with him, as others have suggested, is that in the firt phase of the fight everyone be right up their with him in melee range so that any damage from his big hits is absorbed by the whole group and spread out. In the 2nd phase, out Tank got on the right back side of the stage and turned him away from everyone else and simply tanked him with heals focused solely on him. Everyone else got in the back left side of the stage all grouped together and only did ranged damage. We had one Hunter and myself (a Warden) able to do any ranged damage so we just laid in on him and while it did take a little time we took him down with no problem. Now, as I said, Goruthul was a different issue. We kept wiping on him and I’m not really sure what we were doing wrong.

@Bryandt, the Gorothul fight is a huge threat management fight. The healer should be standing within AOE range of Gorothul, preferably behind him. Once the adds start coming it is imperative that your Tank is taunting adds and your melee’s are using aoe’s (Champs are great here) to keep skeletons off the healer. Note, you can’t get too crazy with aoe’s when blue spirits are there b/c if you kill one you lose hardmode. I usually hit a blade wall or maybe a Rend if blues are out, if they aren’t I’ll use blade-storm or shing-shing. Champ horns, LM’s mez’s are great for ebbing the flow of adds as well.
I highly recommend holding off on group heals as much as possible – having a secondary healer is really helpful here as well. We typically have a captain with us, he hits last stand/in harms way at 60K followed by ministrels fellowship heart at 40k = clear sailing from there even if minnie goes down.

It’s a really fun fight, it does take some time to perfect though!

Another great podcast. Thanks to you two! I did want to point out that when you were discussing the latest “Tell the Community Team”, you talked about the poll option: “Allow for more than 2 options during a reforge” as currently being either add or upgrade a legacy. I think the poll is talking about adding more than two legacy options to add to your LI during the first three reforges. Small bit, but the option seems a little more useful in this case.

Good luck in your future exploration of SG! Though it does get “worse” the further in you get, you’re over half way once you finish that second boss, and the pulls are pretty technically enjoyable, at the very least for us burglars/other CC classes.

Merric wasn’t tanking our warden friend was but it sounds like from multiple comments that it’s no necessary to do all the moving around?

Hahaha. Well, people are always calling me Kia all the time, so I just assumed it was to be pronounced like the car brand name. In french it’s ”Keea” as well, we don’t have anything like ”Kyle”, so I never really thought about the possibility of having it another way really, hehe.
